Technology brings our school community together

With summer gone, another new school year has begun at Purford Green Primary and autumn term is in full swing. Some things look the same, but in other ways we are making great strides to adapt to  ever-changing times.

Early in the term, as usual, preparations to appoint new house captains were made. This is a prestigious role for which candidates must undertake a challenging recruitment process. Firstly, the children read the job description so they understood what was involved in the role.  Those wishing to apply then wrote letters explaining why they wanted to be House Captain. The shortlisted candidates delivered speeches to the other members of their houses across the whole school. Each outlined what they would do as House Captain and why the other children should vote for them.

The current restrictions on large gatherings meant the classes could not meet in the school hall for this event, as they normally would.  But determined not to let Covid19 stand in the way of democracy, the young candidates broadcast their speeches live from the school hall using online technology, whilst the children tuned in from their classrooms.

Executive headteacher, Miss Bloomfield said: ‘The children adapted amazingly and were not fazed one bit. Voting has taken place, votes counted, and the successful candidates were announced.

Whole school gatherings play an important part in helping our children to feel part of the larger community, but social distancing and year group bubbles meant we couldn't continue meeting in our normal way. We used Teams throughout lockdown for school staff to communicate with each other, so the next natural step was to keep the school community working together in a virtual way. Using technology, weekly assemblies still take place by having each class join the Teams meeting so they can watch and take part. This way we make sure we can still celebrate and share our success as a whole school’.

Congratulations to our House Captains!
